The Brief
Thomson Environmental Consultants appointed us in early 2023 to support their marketing activity with a PR strategy designed to help build their online presence, drive traffic to the website, and enhance awareness in key publications and audiences.
What did we do next?
Following our onboarding session, we initially developed a six-month strategy focusing on a mix of PR tactics, including Digital PR, thought leadership, business profiling and ongoing press office support. Since then, we have grown our relationship and now offer full-service marketing support on an ongoing monthly retainer.
We also created SEO-focused on-site content to support said campaigns, further improving search rankings and driving targeted traffic to the website.
Some examples of Digital PR activity and business news announcements we have worked on are; ‘AI maps a way back for endangered reptiles’, ‘Thomson Environmental Consultants appoint former Environment Agency COO’ and ‘The top flood risk areas for 2024’.
The Results
PR results
Since working together, we have achieved 60 pieces of coverage and built 23 quality backlinks to Thomson’s website from a mix of relevant industry, business, regional and national publications. The total combined readership exceeds 41 million.
Our PR activity has raised the profile of Thomson Environmental Consultants. Following this, we often get approached by national and lifestyle journalists for expert commentary, including Ideal Home and, recently BBC 4.
Stand-out PR campaigns
One of our most successful campaigns was a data-led PR Campaign, ‘Top flood risk areas for 2024,’ designed to target search terms related to flooding, key service terms, and regional-specific keywords for hyper relevancy.
We analysed historical Environment Agency data to uncover the top UK flood risk areas for 2024, including geographical facts and figures. Overall, we gained five pieces of coverage, including Essex Live, and Yorkshire Post.. We built two additional backlinks to the dedicated landing page, and the coverage had a total readership of 6.3 million.
SEO results to date
Following the implementation of our PR and marketing strategy, we have seen improved service-related keyword rankings. This is supported by optimised landing pages for the website, which have supported overall keyword improvements.
For example, the landing page for the ‘Onsite Biodiversity’ campaign has generated a new ranking for “onsite biodiversity” in sixth position on Google. Meanwhile, the ‘State of Garden Wildlife’ campaign landing page has supported six new keyword rankings including “UK garden wildlife” in tenth position.
Other new target keywords rankings include ‘biodiversity net gain assessment’ (+98 places to position two), ‘ecology survey’ (+97 places to position three), ‘flood risk activity permit’ (+93 places to position seven) and ‘onsite biodiversity’ (+94 places to position seven).*
Our overall efforts have also supported an increase in total users (+11.9%), direct users (+60%) and referral users (+40.98%). Since working together, we have also seen an increase in on-site events (+5.25%), including on-site search queries (+13.64%) and page views (+18.27%).**
Organic traffic has also increased steadily; we have recently seen a +4.61% increase in organic users and a 6.25% increase in organic new users.*** We are thrilled with these improvements as it can take longer to see the impact of SEO on traffic, and we’re excited to see this improve.
We can also map a correlation between spikes in coverage and overall web traffic growth throughout our time working together, as seen below:

Expanding our retainer!
Following an initial six-month activity, we’re thrilled to announce the renewal of our client contract for another six to twelve months. What’s even more exciting is that our partnership has evolved significantly. Initially focused on PR services only, our proactive approach, drive, and exceptional rapport have led to an expansion of our services. The retainer now encompasses a comprehensive range of offerings, including marketing strategy, SEO, social media management, and content creation. This expansion highlights our commitment to drive growth and delivering exceptional value.
