Every day at Wild PR is social media day, but last Saturday marked the official #SocialMediaDay for the rest of the globe.

This year was the 9th year since the creation of social media, and over those nine years, Social Media Day has grown and grown and is now acknowledged worldwide as the day to celebrate the impact social media has had on global communication.

In today’s world, social media is a word which has become a part of everyone’s lives. It has quite literally made the world a smaller place as it works as a form of connecting people and sharing and exchanging information across the globe.

This year we have decided to bring you 5 of the most significant milestone moments in social media’s history. The record for the most-liked image on Instagram was initially held by Beyoncé for 12 months, with her post revealing her pregnancy. However, this was overtaken by Kylie Jenner in February 2018 when she introduced her daughter Stormi to the world.

As of now the photo captioned merely ‘Stormi Webster’ has a total of 17,974,100 likes.

Do it for the vine! (does anyone remember that?!)
Vine was the app which allowed people to share six-second videos of themselves online, before being closed down by its parent company Twitter on January 17th 2017.

The first user to reach 1 billion loops (views) on Vine was a Miami teenager named Lele Pons, who was made popular on Vine from her prankster videos.

Despite its short-lived success, Vine was responsible for many internet success stories including the rising fame of stars Nash Grier and the now international pop singer, Shawn Mendes.

Former US President Barack Obama holds the record for the most liked message on Twitter.
The record-holding tweet is a quote from Nelson Mandela, the former South African president and prolific civil rights activist.

The tweet currently has 4.6 million likes.

One ordinary day in 2017, Katy Perry became not only the record holder for the most followers on Twitter for a female but also the first person in Twitter history to reach 100 million followers.

The Milestone record was a result of her fanbase increasing steadily by 40 million followers over the past two years, allowing her to make history on the popular social media platform.

Today she has over 110 million Twitter followers.

And there you have it! A round-up of mind-blowing social media records shows just how influential social media has been over the nine years since it was born. So you’ve seen the most significant moments on social media, but how has social media helped businesses reach their own milestones?

Social media has been massively beneficial to businesses over the last few years, simply because it allows a brand to connect with its customers, consumers or target market.

We spend a lot of time looking after clients’ social media to help businesses achieve their goals, and the best thing about it is that many different business targets can be met through social media.

For example, if a business’s aim was to expand their customer base, then we could help them do just that by engaging with their target audience and posting relevant and unique content for them to engage with. Expanding a business’s customer base could mean an increase in sales or new leads- which ultimately generates higher profits for that business. If the target was met, then this would mean the business would see significant ROI, which is something we always achieve for our clients.

Other than helping businesses reach their goals, social media also makes a brand or company look trustworthy, and as though they are a leader. When a business fails to show a social media presence, they are missing the opportunity to connect with its customers on a humanised level. A study from the Digital Marketing Magazine found that 74% of consumers rely on social media to guide purchasing decisions. So if your business has little or no social media presence, then you’re missing out!
