Independent wine shops Kwas and Hoults are hosting a day of celebration as part of ARCH DAY 2022, including free wine tasting and live music, on Saturday 9th July.

On the day, local residents can expect to enjoy free Polish wine tasting with Central Wines, a Polish-inspired small plates food menu and live music from Huddersfield-based artist Penny, hosted in the arch space. Come rain or shine, there will be something for different ages to enjoy and get involved with the community arch spirit, and get to see firsthand what makes these businesses so special.

The activity throughout the day includes:

A fresh, uplifting and inspiring tale of unique wines that has been created over the past years by Polish families. Thanks to modern winemaking technologies and climate change Poland has become a perfect place where the magic grows. The wine tasting will include examples of classics like Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but also a big diversity of styles from delicate whites like Johanniter or Solaris, and charismatic reds like Cabernets Cortis and Dorsa or Marechal Foch.

Live music from PENNY 5pm

Just a small-town girl, trying to make it in the big bad world – PENNY is a Huddersfield-based artist, with sweet and bewitching vocals, irresistible melodies and West Yorkshire charm. PENNY bares all on her songs, as she displays sentiments on toxic relationships and self-worth. While supporting the likes of Sophie Ellis Bextor and Selah Sue, through a series of upbeat, electro-pop ballads, PENNY tackles her dreams, her queerness, and her mental health journey

Huddersfield’s only town centre vegan sourdough bakery, Lone Loaf will also be offering free samples of Zapiekanki (Polish pizza) and a 100% vegan Polish-influenced small plates food menu will be available from 12pm – 9pm.

Created by The Arch Company in collaboration with KWAS Wine Bar and Hoults, ARCH DAY 2022 is a celebration of local businesses who call the railway arches home. ARCH DAY is a culmination of The Arch Company’s annual #loveyourlocalarches campaign, designed to raise awareness and the profile of their arch customers. To help the businesses to mark the occasion, The Arch Company has provided match-funding, via community action charity Groundwork London, to ensure the day is as successful as it can be.

Duncan Sime, Co-Owner of Kwas said: “We are thrilled to be taking part in ARCH DAY, and celebrating the independent businesses that can make use of the unique spaces available. We moved into the premises in December 2021, as we loved the off-the-beaten-track location and the great history of venues and businesses that have made Viaduct Street their home. We can’t wait to celebrate ARCH DAY, along with our people, our culture and our wines with the residents of Kirklees – showcasing what we do best and sing from the train tracks about how good Huddersfield is.”

A spokesperson from The Arch Company said: “I’m delighted to see Kwas and Hoults take place in ARCH DAY 2022 and hope members of the public join in the celebrations! We know arches can sometimes be tucked away, so we are here to shine a spotlight on brilliant businesses such as these and encourage the community around them to support local.”

Created by The Arch Company and working with Network Rail and Transport for London, ARCH DAY is all about encouraging local people to visit their local arches and celebrate their spaces. ARCH DAY is taking place in numerous urban areas across the country, including Forest Gate, Manchester, Newcastle, Kent and Devon Railway arches are filled with businesses of all kinds: bakeries, breweries and butchers; bars and restaurants; hairdressers and beauty salons; vehicle repairers and MOT garages; makers workshops and even offices or logistics centres.
