Wild PR work experience - CurtisThis week, we’ve been joined by student and budding entrepreneur, Curtis Powell from Huddersfield.

“Being someone who aspires to have a career in the business world, I felt the desire to build my knowledge and skills in one of the most important sectors of business – marketing and PR.

Currently, I’m studying A level Business, English and Politics at Huddersfield New College, which is local to Wild PR’s office, so I felt that my theory from my education was relevant and valued – being able to apply it into the workspace.

My week began with a warm welcome from all the members at Wild and an induction into the office. Once I was familiarised with the environment and equipment, Ellis, the account director at Wild, ran through my tasks for the week, which began with a detailed personality quiz. Each member of the Wild team has done one of these to understand more about themselves and how they can work better as a team.

The results were shockingly accurate and gave me a new insight into my personality, learning style and how I am with friends. I found that I have strengths of creativity, insightfulness and altruism but at the same time can be perfectionistic and sensitive to criticism.

I then completed online training courses with some of the advanced platforms used at Wild, such as Google Analytics and Hootsuite Academy. Afterwards, I was invited into the meeting room where the team discussed what was coming up that week for each client and the tasks they’d completed already; it was only Monday!

Throughout the week, my main tasks were to create social media posts and graphics as well as research and draft content for blogs for some of Wild’s clients, such as Conscious Youth and The Nappy Gurus. Personally, I found working on their social media pages interesting as I have been an active follower of Conscious Youth and have previously met them at a workshop.

I was able to see the process of creating a social media post which included how posts are drafted, edited and then scheduled for later publishing. I enjoyed using the Canva platform to make fun graphics and enjoyed writing engaging written content to publish across social media. I was able to ask for help whenever I needed it and receive feedback on improving certain pieces of work.

Working in an office environment and within an agency like Wild PR has been engaging and valuable to me in making decisions and plans for the future. Gaining insight into how a workplace functions, how staff engage with one another and how tasks should be planned and organised has really helped me understand more about the business industry.

My experience has given me personal closure on what I’d like to do in business and allowed me to decide which aspects I enjoy the most.

Overall, I definitely recommend other students take the opportunity to engage in the experience of working with Wild PR if they are interested in business and marketing.”
